Thank you to all of you for your love and continuing support of the Aubrey Rose Foundation!

Fall is almost upon us and that means school time. For our family, Spencer is back at Eastern Kentucky University for his sophomore year and Carly is getting ready for her Senior year at UC. We had a successful Fireworks Dinner at the Syndicate and we plan on doing this again. We also had a great turnout for the Harvest Home Parade and what a beautiful night that was!

Please mark your calendars! We are getting geared up for the Hearts and Arts, our first all day scrapbooking event. We are co-hosting this with the non-profit, Art Machine on October 11. And our Let's Dance for the Heart of It is scheduled for November 14.

And please be sure to read about India and how simple things can make alittle girl's life so much better. And be sure to watch for a follow-up interview with Hannah and her mom, Pacita, on channel 5 news at 11p tonight!

This month also is special because Spencer is turning 20 on the 14th of September and Jerry is keeping me laughing as we celebrate 26 years of complete married bliss (his words not mine!) on September 17th.

Love to you and your family!

Jerry, Nancy, Carly, Spencer and Saint Aubrey Hollenkamp

Fireworks Dinner

Our first annual Fireworks Dinner was held at the Newport Syndicate on Sunday, August 31st. What a night that was. You could feel the magic in the air... with the wonderful dinner we had, the open bar, the guaranteed parking spot…and the entertainment was tremendous. We had the best father-daughter acoustic duo in Cincinnati with Milovan and Anna! We have already booked them to come back next year!

After the Fireworks were over, one of our friends said that our invitation was so true... I asked her what she meant and she said the "fireworks were so close, you could feel them in your heart!" just like our invitation had said! We had a front row seat for the fireworks and didn't even have to fight to get it! Please put this on your calendar for next year...You don't want to miss this!

Harvest Home Parade

What a beautiful night we had for the Harvest Home Parade. We had a lot of our scholarship recipients there as well as some of the parents, board members and friends of the Foundation. We also had Larry Smith and his puppets ride on our float as well. It was a great night which raised some awareness of the Aubrey Rose Foundation.

India - a Little Girl from Cincinnati

India is a little fighter who has been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, severe seizure disorder, Juvenile Polyposis, Acid Reflux Syndrome, Anxiety and massive brain damage but yet she is always smiling.

Earlier in the year, India had become very sick with Acute Pancreatitis with Necrotizing Tissue. She was in the hospital for six weeks, most of that time in the I.C.U. That was the first time out of all of her many surgeries, hospital stays, etc., that her smile wasn't visible. These combined episodes had taken a toll on India. Her mom had always taught India and her son, Diondre, to find the joys of the simple things in life. They are a smiling family.

One of the things that India has always enjoyed is taking baths. "Bath time" has always represented her time to play and relax in the water. It served as a soothing moment for her - one which brought her much joy. But some added weight gain and heightened muscular tightness made it difficult to safely get India into the tub. As a result, her shower/bathing experiences became limited as it required two people to get her into the tub.

We may not understand the freedom in being able to independently get up and bath one's self. It seems so minor, but to India it meant the world! For India, this liberty is not one that she freely has, as she is dependent on her caregiver(s) to assist her. At this junction in her life she needs some simple pleasures of life, such as bathing.

Aubrey's Foundation helped India’s family get a bathing system for India so that she can continue to enjoy her bath time! Below is a thank you letter from the Mom to let us know what this meant to them.

"I just want to say "thank you" for purchasing the bathing system for India. Thank you for your willingness to open up your life and heart to help others. Thank you for sharing your memories of Aubrey Rose, her smile and her zest for life. The purchase of that bathing system will allow my daughter to take a bath. Everyday, many "able body" individuals do things without even giving them much thought, such as the ability to self feed, self clothe and so on. Often we forget about what it would be like if we weren't able to do those things. For India, she loves taking a bath. I think it is soothing for her to get in the water and relax. I can't wait to see the smile on her face when we place her in the tub, to take a " real" water cultivating bath."

My hearts desire is to bless others as we have been blessed.

With warm thoughts,

LaDonna and Family

Healing the World's Hearts - Hannah is Going Home

Finally, Hannah and her Mother, Pacita, will be going home this Sunday morning! They are so excited about this and I would love to see their family’s reaction to how wonderful Hannah looks. Hannah has gained over 3 pounds since she has been here Hannahand has grown an inch!!! That is amazing and such a great sign that she is healing and starting to enjoy life as a “normal” child. It’s amazing what the right blood and oxygen mix can do for your body!!! Even Hannah has realized how much better she feels. In one of her conversations with her father, Hannah told him, “Papa, you don’t have to carry me anymore, I can walk now!” And she is walking and even running now!

We want to thank all of you who have had a part in Hannah’s repair and in helping to make Hannah’s and Pacita’s stay a comfortable one here in Cincinnati. For everyone who sent get well cards, for the many phone cards they received, and the many other gifts of kindness that you have shown, I know that Pacita and Hannah are extremely grateful for your generosity. It’s because of our working with dedicated surgeons like Dr. Manning and Dr. Eghtesady and all of the skilled staff at Cincinnati Children’s, Debby and Carol at Delta Airlines for their support, all the dedicated staff and volunteers at the Ronald McDonald House and all of YOUR support that our Healing the World’s Hearts Program can bring children from within the United States and from around the world to Cincinnati Children’s for a life saving operation. In Hannah’s case, her operation definitely SAVED HER LIFE!

Hannah is a beautiful 4 yr. old girl from the Philippines whom we treated for Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF), a cardiac anomaly that refers to a combination of four related heart defects that commonly occur together. The four defects include Pulmonary stenosis, Ventricular septal defect / VSD, Overriding aorta, and Right ventricular hypertrophy. TOF affects about 5 out of every 10,000 births. It is very treatable and about 95% of babies are repaired within the first year of life instead of the 4th year of life.

Hannah had suffered through years of not being able to run and play like a normal child because of low oxygen. This is the same defect that Carly, our oldest, was born with. She was repaired 20 years ago on February 11 and is doing very well but could eventually need a valve replacement. 10 years previous to Carly’s repair, TOF kids did die from that defect, but in this day and age, it’s unacceptable that Hannah would die from this defect. Thanks to everyone's help she will not! I know it is just one child we are helping but it’s one child’s life we have saved!!!

The "Healing the World's Hearts" program was developed by Aubrey's Foundation with help from Cincinnati Children's Hospital doctors, surgeons and corporate support to provide "simple" heart procedures to sick children in the U.S. and developing countries around the world. We say "simple" heart procedures because these are surgeries which can be performed in the U.S. that can SAVE A CHILD'S LIFE letting them go back home to live a healthy and productive life without follow-up cardiac procedures.
